DIY TIC TAC TOE GAME BOARD

DIY TIC TAC TOE GAME BOARD

I’m really excited about this DIY because it’s something I have always wanted. Jayli is the QUEEN of tic tac toe. If you can’t beat her-join her.

I saw these tic tac toe boards at Walmart and was totally inspired. Especially because I’m not paying $98 for a game I can make myself.

WHAT YOU NEED:

  • pink tent (lol, obviously a necessity)
  • wood conditioner
  • polyshade stain and poly– classic oak
  • polyshade stain and poly-bombay
  • minwax-clear gloss
  • minwax-bombay mahogany
  • 220 grit sandpaper
  • 50 grit sandpaper
  • wood burner
  • 1 1/2″ screws
  • wood glue*
  • felt pads
  • wood clamps
  • safety glasses
  • drill
  • drill bit set
  • cabinet pull (optional – for the lid)
  • wood filler
  • 3″ stencils
  • Sander

MATERIALS

  • 1 – 4″ x 4″ x 8′ (you could use a 4′ long instead if you can find one)
  • 2 – 1″ x 3″ x 8′ board
  • 1- Craft Masters Lodgepole Pine 3/4″ x 16″ x 36″

CUT LIST

  • 9 – 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ blocks from the 4×4
  • 2 –  13 7/8″ from the 1×3 -(for your base)
  • 4 – 12 3/8″ from the 1×3 -(for your base)
  • 2 –  13 7/8″ from the 1×3 -(for your lid, optional)
  • 4 – 12 3/8″ from the 1×3 -(for your lid, optional)
  • 6 –  3 5/8″ from the 1×3
  • 2 – 12 3/8″ from the lodgepole pine – for the base and the lid (only cut 1 if you’re not making a lid)

MAKE YOUR BOX/BASE

To build this box, follow the cuts accordingly and attach it together using wood glue and clamps. We countersunk the sides and screwed it together for extra security.

If you’re making a lid, follow the same steps and create another “box”. You can round off the edges on the lid, like we did, by sanding the edges. We also added a cabinet pull to the top of ours.

CUT YOUR SQUARE CUBES

Cut 9 blocks of 3 1/2 Square Cubes from your 4×4.

GLUE YOUR (6) 3 5/8″ SLOTS ONTO YOUR BASE

You can mark the back and drill screws into the back to secure them as well

*Put your 4×4 cubes in the sections to make sure your cubes can fit in them before you glue them down

Use your wood clamps to secure the slot pieces

This is how it should look.

Now the fun part is to personalize it. I got real creative and made x’s and o’s. Feel free to use whatever designs and colors you want. I used a stencil and drew my letters on and then traced it with the wood burner.

WOOD BURN IT + STAIN IT

APPLY FELT  PADS TO THE BOTTOM BASE (OPTIONAL)

felt pads

Once the stain is dry, you’re good to go. This was a really fun project and I hope it inspired you to make a tic tac toe board as well.
