Well, here is the first DIY project for JJ’s Playroom Makeover. I wanted this playroom wall to have something fun on it– other than pictures. There is a weird window on the right side of this wall and made picture-placing odd. So, I came up with the idea of doing a DIY wall stencil on her playroom wall instead. It is the perfect accent wall for the playroom!
I didn’t want to go out and buy a custom decal. I remembered I had stencils I could use. And, I already had acrylic paint so as soon as I had the idea of doing a wall stencil, I got to work on this custom DIY wall stencil for the playroom, on a budget!
I asked for JJ’s input on what she wanted the playroom wall to say, counted the lines, and made spacing in between them as necessary. I measured the height between each line and placed my 5″ stencils on the wall how we liked them. I made a straight line with a leveler and a pencil.
Then, I started off using a black sharpie (because I am using black paint) and I outlined each letter of the stencil making sure it was even and spaced correctly. Using a black sharpie with the stencil ensured a crisp outline.
For the spaces I used a spare letter/number and lined the next letter up right next to it. (See the number 9 between “have” and “fun” in the photo above.)
After I had the stencils perfectly evened up, straightened, and outlined with the black sharpie, I painted inside the outline with acrylic paint. It took longer than I had anticipated, but we are all very happy with how it turned out!
update: I’ve had this particular paintbrush set for 7 years now and I’m still impressed with how they have held up. 10 out of 10 recommend.
After I finished painting each letter, I removed the painters tape and the stencil.
Here’s what the finished product looks like! I’m so happy with how this DIY playroom wall stencil turned out! It’s a bold statement that I wanted for the playroom. When you first walk into the playroom, you notice it, but it’s not overwhelming. It is the perfect accent wall for the playroom!
